In advocating sustainable development nowadays, solar street light, as an environmentally friendly and efficient lighting equipment, is being widely used in various places such as city streets, countryside paths, parks, and scenic spots. It not only brings convenience to people’s nighttime travel but also contributes to environmental protection.

The basis of the working principle of solar street lights

Solar energy into electricity

The energy source of solar street lights is solar energy, and its core component, solar cells, plays a key role. The solar cell consists of a negatively charged electron layer and a positively charged hole layer. When the sunlight penetrates the solar cell, the photons interact with the atoms inside the cell to stimulate the electrons to detach from the atoms, and these activated electrons are pushed to the positively charged holes under the action of the electric field to form an electric current. This process is known as the photoelectric effect, and it is through this effect that solar energy is successfully converted into direct current.
Solar cells are usually made of crystalline silicon semiconductor material, which has good photovoltaic conversion properties. Solar panels, on the other hand, are made up of a combination of solar cells that can be connected in series or parallel to increase the output voltage and current to meet different power requirements. For example, a common 100-watt solar panel may consist of 36 or more solar cells that work together to convert large amounts of solar energy into usable electricity.

Power Storage and Management

The DC electricity generated by solar panels needs to be stored to power streetlights at night or when there is not enough light, and this relies on batteries. Between the solar panel and the battery, the charge controller plays a crucial role.
The charge controller connects the solar panel to the battery and acts as an intelligent housekeeper, precisely regulating the voltage. During the day, when the solar panel generates electricity, the charge controller will reasonably control the charging current and voltage according to the state of the battery, avoiding overcharging the battery and prolonging its service life. At night, the solar panel stops generating electricity, at which time the charge controller will prevent the current from flowing back from the battery to the solar panel, preventing the unnecessary loss of battery power.
When the night falls, the sunlight gradually disappears, and the solar street lights on the light sensor will begin to play a role. The photocell is able to keenly sense changes in the ambient light, and once it detects that the light intensity has decreased to a certain level, it will trigger a circuit that releases the electricity stored in the battery and supplies it to the light source of the streetlight, making the streetlight come on. When dawn comes and the light is enhanced, the sensor will automatically cut off the power supply to stop the street light and the whole process without human intervention to achieve automated operation.

Solar street light type and working mode

All in one solar street light

With its unique advantages, an all-in-one solar street light is the ideal choice for small space lighting. It is affordable and easy to install, which makes it popular among users. The most important feature of this kind of street light is that it integrates all the components, such as solar panels, controllers, batteries, and LED lights, in a compact unit, forming a highly integrated lighting system.
In terms of working mode, all-in-one solar street light is very intelligent. At dusk, when the light fades, the street light is switched on automatically. After about 30 seconds, the brightness is automatically reduced to 20 percent in order to save energy. And when the street light is equipped with motion sensors to detect the movement of objects around, it will quickly respond and instantly increase the brightness to 100%, providing sufficient lighting for pedestrians or vehicles. Once the object leaves the detection range, after a certain time delay, if no new motion is detected, the street light brightness will return to 20%. This intelligent dimming mode meets actual lighting needs while maximizing energy savings.

Integrated Solar Street Light

The integrated solar street light is more suitable for lighting large spaces such as public roads, busy streets, extensive gardens and remote areas away from the power grid. Its structural design is different from that of an integrated street light in that the solar panels are set up separately and are usually mounted on top of the pole or other well-lit locations to receive full sunlight. While the rest of the components, such as the controller, batteries, and LED lamps, are integrated into a single unit and mounted at a suitable location on the pole.
Integrated solar street lights also have a variety of operating modes. Some models operate in constant brightness mode, remaining fully illuminated from dusk to dawn, providing constant, steady lighting for large areas. Others use a time-of-day dimming mode, operating at full brightness for the first few hours of the night to meet lighting needs during peak traffic or periods of high human activity. Subsequently, as time passes into the low peak period, the streetlights automatically reduce their brightness to save electricity. This flexible working mode enables rational allocation of energy according to the actual needs of different scenarios and improves energy utilization efficiency.

Two kinds of solar street light working mode comparison

The same point

Whether it is integrated solar street light or integrated solar street light, its basic energy conversion process is the same. They all rely on solar panels to convert solar energy into electrical energy, through the charge controller to manage and store electrical energy, and use the battery at night or when there is no light to power the LED light source. In terms of core components, both are equipped with monocrystalline or polycrystalline silicon solar panels that efficiently absorb solar energy and convert it into electricity. At the same time, both use lead-acid, lithium-ion, or LiFePO4 batteries for power storage and PWM or MPPT charge controllers to precisely control the charging process, ensuring battery safety and longevity. In addition, an LED light source, an energy-efficient lighting element, is standard on both, providing bright and stable light for the streetlights.

Differences

The main difference between the two types of streetlights lies in the structural design. Integrated solar street light pursues a high degree of integration and tightly integrates all components into one unit. This design makes the street light compact and easy to install, especially suitable for places with limited space. The integrated solar street light separates the solar panels separately so that the position of the solar panels can be flexibly adjusted according to the actual installation environment in order to obtain the best light conditions, which is more suitable for large areas and places with high light requirements.

The advantages of solar street lights

Energy saving and environmental protection

Solar street lights use solar energy as a clean energy source, completely getting rid of the dependence on the traditional power grid, greatly reducing the carbon emissions generated by power generation, and contributing to the mitigation of global climate change. At the same time, through the use of advanced LED technology and reasonable optical design, solar street lights can accurately control the direction of light, reducing unnecessary light scattering and effectively reducing light pollution, creating a more comfortable and healthy nighttime environment for people.

Convenient installation and maintenance

As there is no need to lay complicated cable lines, the installation process of solar street lights becomes simple and fast, especially for those remote areas that are difficult to connect to the power grid or where the power grid coverage is not perfect. Moreover, solar streetlights are automated; from charging during the day to lighting at night, the whole process does not require human intervention, which greatly reduces maintenance costs and manpower investment.

Enhance safety and environmental quality

Adequate lighting can effectively deter crime, reduce nighttime crime rates, and create a safe traveling environment for residents and pedestrians. In addition, through the remote management software, the staff can monitor the working status of the streetlight in real time, find and solve the problem in time, avoid energy waste, and further reduce operating costs. At the same time, the solar street light can work stably under all kinds of bad weather conditions, whether it is a cold, snowy day or after a windy hurricane. It can continue to provide people with lighting services and guarantee road traffic safety.
With its unique working principle, solar street light realizes efficient energy use and intelligent lighting control. Different types of solar street lights have their own advantages and are suitable for different scenarios. Its energy-saving and environmental protection, easy installation and maintenance, as well as improved safety and many other advantages, make it a star product in the field of modern lighting. With the continuous progress of technology, solar street lights will certainly play a more important role in future urban construction and rural development, creating a better living environment for us.
